Kauai Vacations
The Island of Kauai is nicknamed "The Garden Isle". It gets it's name because of all the lush rain forests and green mountains with magnificent waterfalls. Kaua'i is the oldest Hawaiian Island and the smallest of the four major islands of Hawaii. Kauai, the northernmost island, is one of the four counties in the state of Hawaii and the least populated with about 63,000 residents. The Island of Kauai's flower is the Mokihana Berry and the Island's color is purple. Some of the places to see when on Kauai are: The Menehune Fishpond (according to legend, constructed by menehunes between dusk to dawn), Prince Kuhio Park (Prince Kuhio was born here), Spouting Horn (a shoreline lava tube which has sea water compressed in it and pushes up like a geyser: a moaning sound exudes and legend says the legendary lizard, Lehu, was trapped here and we hear his cries), Waimea Canyon State Park, Koke'e State Park, The Fern Grotto, Sleeping Giant, and many other fantastic and legendary sites. There are many unique facts about Kauai. Kauai has the only navigable river in the state, the Wailua River. British explorer Captain James Cook made the first landing in the Hawaiian Islands in Waimea Bay in 1778. Kauai is the only island without the mongoose. Kauai by law has no buildings built taller than a palm tree (4 stories). Kawaikini is Kauai's highest mountain at 5,243 feet. The Island of Kauai is home to the wettest spot on earth. The average rainfall per year on Mt. Waialeale is over 400 inches a year. Kauai has been the backdrop for many of Hollywood's classic films. Some on the list (over 60) include South Pacific, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Jurassic Park, King Kong, Honeymoon in Vegas, and our favorite "Blue Hawaii". Kauai has a wide selection of accommodations from luxury to moderate budget, totaling over 8000 hotels and condo resort units. These resorts are located primarily on the South Shore (Po'ipu), the East Side (Kapa'a/Wailua/Lihue), and the North Shore (Princeville/Hanalei). Kauai's weather can vary from one part of the island to another, with anywhere from 20 to 40 inches of rainfall annually in the coastal areas. Kauai is home to nine golf courses, five of the top 15 courses in the state. There are 45 white sand beaches throughout the island. Kauai should be on everybody's "must visit" list!
